A sturdy ceramic mug that depicts Dōgen Zenji (1200–1253), the founder of Sōtō Zen Buddhism in Japan, seated in quiet meditation. Rendered in subtle graphite tones, the image emphasizes stillness, discipline, and inward clarity rather than outward drama. Every line is restrained, intentional, and calm. The accompanying calligraphy references one of Dōgen’s most essential teachings:
身心脱落 (Shinjin datsuraku) “Mind and body fall away.”
This phrase does not describe escape or negation, but the complete release of self-grasping—the moment when practice and being are no longer separate. The figure’s relaxed posture, lowered gaze, and open hands embody this state directly, without explanation. The composition is deliberately sparse. Architectural lines frame the monk without enclosing him, reinforcing Zen’s emphasis on form without attachment. The red seal serves as a traditional mark of authenticity, grounding the work in classical East Asian ink and calligraphic tradition.
