寒山拾得 - Ceramic Coffee Cup (11oz & 15oz) original art © 2025 B.A. Cotton
A sturdy ceramic mug that brings Hanshan and Shide 寒山拾得 to life! These are the Japanese names of the legendary Zen figures Hanshan (寒山, “Cold Mountain”) and Shide (拾得, “Foundling” or “拾った者”). This evocative ink painting depicts Hanshan and Shide, the legendary Zen eccentrics whose laughter echoed through Chinese and Japanese monasteries for centuries.
The origianl art work was created by Barry A. Cotton and is the calligraphy he was awarded Highest Distinction for in an all Japan Calligraphy Competition. Rendered in bold, fluid brushstrokes, the figures appear relaxed, intimate, and quietly amused — unconcerned with appearances, rules, or reputation. Their closeness reflects the Zen teaching that true wisdom is often found outside doctrine, expressed through humor, spontaneity, and compassion. The accompanying calligraphy names the pair directly, affirming their identity while the painting itself dissolves all formality. The traditional red seal anchors the work in classical East Asian ink tradition, while the minimalist composition keeps it timeless and modern. (© 2025 B.A. Cotton | All Rights Reserved)
This piece embodies Zen’s most radical message: awakening is not acquired — it is inborn, natural, inbred, congenital, inherent, intrinsic, instinctive, intuitive, spontaneous, unlearned, and untaught.
